********=Baptized.

...And it was SO GOOD.  I even attached a pic to prove it happened! He is phenomenal. And the policy change happened just in time. My beloved Persian people can get baptized now!

Other fun happenings:  We had a mini missionary this weekend! Her name is Sister ********, and she was HILARIOUS. Age 16. Home-schooled. Has an amazing testimony, and a super interesting life perspective.  I like her, and she brought us some appreciated miracles. As all minis tend to do.

Speaking of miracles...

******* and **** have baptismal dates for October 20th! Teaching them is a little surreal, but she has a lot of faith and is so SO loving.   We kind of lose them a church. She and ***** are better fellowshippers than most of our members. Which is saying something. 'Cause our members are BOMB.

Love you all so so much!

P.S. I'm learning a lot. Here are some scriptures that talk about some of the things I'm learning. I have a whole comprehensive list in my lesson plans that I think I'm going to organize and share with all of you someday...then we can all add do it and share it with the other missionaries in the ward and such. Good idea, right? Now to find the time...

3 Ne 28:4-10. Purest desires.
2 Nephi 4:21. Filled w/ His love.
Mark 8:35. Lose self.
Alma 17:22-23. Until the day that I die

P.P.S. Guess what? President Uchtdorf quoted me in stake conference! Apparently President Weidman shared a story with him from one of my e-mails and he liked it...and he shared it. Cool, right? I think he sort of misunderstood the story, so the miracle sounded a little grander than it was...but the principles were True (the idea of it never being too late to change--see miracle story in last week's letter to president), and apparently it sort of became a theme of sorts...so...that was exciting. :)

PICS: There's some of our run to see the beach (don't worry--we stayed on the other side of the street...and there was a whole park btwn us and the sand...and we were only there for a sec...so not disobedient)

One of our dinner w/ the ********** a few wks back

One of us and our mini weekend missionary, Sister *********. That was an adventure! :)

And, most exciting of all, one of us with ******!  WHO GOT BAPTIZED!!! Oh glorious day! :)

Old.

Hello loves!

Subject line explanation:  I just ran 10 miles (...ish...we don't actually know for sure) and my knees feel 90 years old. Time to buy new shoes. And to never try that again probably.

The other subject line explanation:  I'm kind of an old missionary. "Experienced" "Responsible" "Masterful Teacher" ...ha.  I'm learning how to accept the Sister Wells that Heavenly Father had in mind when He sent me here. It's been a kind of profound process.  But I like it. Remind me to tell you about the puzzle piece analogy sometime. And to send you all sorts of perhaps-laughable "wise missionary advice". (especially to the missionaries from the ward, Dad. I could do better at that. Sorry I'm slackin'.)

Anyway, there are miracles below. I love you all a great deal. You can make fun of the way I said "a great deal" if you want. I kinda did too.

...And...

That's it, I think. Mostly 'cause it's already 4:01pm and the other VC sistas need some time on this thing.

I LOVE MISSIONARY WORK! More than ever :)

Love,

Sister Wells

P.S. ***** IS GETTING BAPTIZED ON SATURDAY. Remember him? No? We met him in a laundromat last week and the elders started teaching him a few days later?...I'll send pics next week. Sigh. I love Persians :)

P.P.S. Does someone want to send me some decent pens? I keep buying cheap ones and I keep losing the few decent ones I steal from other VC sisters. Ahem. Borrow from other VC sisters. Also, do you have any extra BareMinerals Mineral Veil lying around, mom? If so, send it when it's convenient. If not, I can buy some here so no worries.

Hello President!

It's been a great week!

Things to report on:

12 week program: We're almost right on track!  We've had some great insights come about because of it, as usual--especially from the Family History section.

Online "Adjusting to Missionary Life":  Technically, I came out as Yellow. But I really think I'm more of a Green right now. I just have a hard time hitting the "Always" and "Never" buttons...b/c I'm an overanalytical thinker and overanalytical thinkers have a hard time with Absolute statements.

My companion: Thriving. Her spanish is improving rapidly. She is incredibly dedicated to her language study, and she is wonderfully patient with her sometimes scatter-brained trainer. She's great at "going with the flow," but I'm trying to give her more opportunities to take the lead.  This is where I have to nix my subconscious pride in the roots. It's the ugliest part of myself, and I hate when I start to notice its exposure.  But, as Sister Ellis and I like to say, "We're workin' on it..." :)

My goals: To set less goals and to follow up better. I only let myself make 4 personal goals this week (as opposed to 10-12). We'll see how I do!

Miracles:

We gave a tour to a family on Saturday night at the VC--grandfather, mother, and daughter. (Mother and daughter are visiting from Provo). The mother asked Sister Ellis & I to show them "just a few things" b/c her very inactive (like, baptized 50 years ago and never really went to church status) father was very impatient and didn't really want to be there. But she wanted him to see the Joseph Smith movie. So we decided to them the Christus and God's Plan first.  As normal, everyone was tearful at the end of God's Plan.  But beyond that, it was in this room that the grandfather finally began to open up.  He said it was a lovely movie to show what "could be" with families, but that sometimes it was just too late...

...My heart always has a very reaction to that "too late" statement. Because if there is anything I have a testimony of, President, it is the unfaltering power of the Atonement in families--and its perfect ability to heal every relationship at whatever stage it may be in. It is never too late. Never past the "point of no return." Never a lost tomato. ...However you or any of the general authorities want to put it. And I LOVE that. Heavenly Father loves us too much and His families are too important to him to not give us every opportunity to allow His Son to heal them.

And so I'm testifying my sincerest, most heartfelt guts out. And then Sis Ellis joins. And then the mother tearfully begins to testify of the same...and more particularly, how she, as a single mother, knows God has a perfect plan for her to have every opportunity for all of His blessings. And the daughter (who also served a mission) seconds that testimony.

...so, it was just a typically powerful moment in the VC, (Miracle 1) from which everyone left without giving us any contact info. Unfortunately.

BUT FORTUNATELY...

The mother and daughter walk into our ward the next morning, which is the ward that the inactive grandfather belongs to. (Miracle 2)

Mother and daughter begin telling us about what an impact that Family movie made on the grandfather, and how it facilitated a lot of really important conversations (that they had been praying for) later that evening. (Miracle 3)

They thanked us for helping them to create the miracle (Miracle 4)

And then they gave us the contact information of their grandfather (Miracle 5)

This all happened right before two new investigators walked in, after taking 2 buses and walking 2 LONG blocks to get there (Miracle 6).

...They loved church, of course, because Mar Vista is specially built for investigators. The work is taking off, President! We are so blessed. The faith of our leadership and ward members is being rewarded with miracles.

Long story short, Mar Vista could probably use another set of missionaries soon...or at least, would we be okay to go on splits with some of the ward missionaries occasionally?

Thank you for all you do! You're in our prayers.

Sister Wells

When I wrote "YES" on ***'s TR before he actually came to church...Making dinner at Sister **********'s house (remind me to tell you all about those incredible people sometime)...super cool guy I followed around at this VC event last week (remind me to tell you about him sometime too)...Lunch w/ *****. Hilarious. Again, I'll tell you someday :) Ugh! He's so GREAT!

A Day in the Miraculous Life...sigh.

Okay, so a lot of you have asked me about my VC schedule and what our typical days are like, etc...

This is my answering your question, while also sharing some of the RIDICULOUS MIRACLES that have gone down these last few days. You'll have to read the letter to president to get the latter. (Ugh. I'm so sorry I don't have time to fully document the JOY of the BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!...but read the letter and you'll get a taste. It was SO AMAZING. Can't even express.)

...Okay. I don't have enough time to go through that so it makes sense...and it's not even a super typical day. BUT maybe I'll do another next time. My e-mails are always so disappointing to me. But that's okay! Because this work most certainly ISN'T!!!

I literally love it here more than ever. I love my companion. I love my mission president. I love my ward and my leaders and my INVESTIGATORS and the VC and...just everything. If I could stand on my bathroom sink and throw my hands down like that cute little girl in the "validation" youtube video...I would. But I'm in the VC. Which is a semi-public place.

And I love all of you, of course. Never forget that there's a missionary in LA prayin' her guts out for ya.

Love,

Sister Wells

Hello President,

It's been a MIRACULOUS week. I can only begin to tell you.

The biggest miracle of our fast was that our investigator, ***, came to church.

These are the details of the story if you have time:

We have been meeting with *** for the past 4 months or so. He is a golden investigator in that he progresses very deeply (though not necessarily "quickly" unless you're looking at it in the grand scheme of things). He is in 3 Nephi, and loves the Book of Mormon. He recognizes that he now has a relationship with God and he prays all of the time. We have been inviting him and teaching him about the importance of church all along--and let me tell you, the spirit has worked on him each time. It's not that I'm proud of our teaching in those moments, but I can truly testify that the spirit has guided us with each invitation. And yet he never committed to come. We came to find out later it was because of his girlfriend, who was a little nervous about his investigation of the Mormon church and told him that if he were to convert, they would have to seriously reconsider their relationship. They've been together 20 years and have very set Sunday routines. So, on Saturday, we shared with him 1 Nephi 5:1-11, where Sariah's story of faith is told...when her sons return from Jerusalem and her fears and doubts are ended. We compared him to Lehi, and promised him his whole life--including his relationships--would be blessed if he would obey God's commandments and come to church. *******, our member, shared her conversion story, and how difficult it was for her to CHANGE and to admit that it was all true. She boldly made promises to him and encouraged him as well. And yet, despite the powerful spirit that was present and the tears in ***'s eyes, he apologetically declined the invitation to commit.

...but we still walked away feeling happy about his progress, and confident that he would eventually come.

Fast forward to Sunday. We worked in the VC from 9-10:30...but we got in a tour at about 10:20 that took us to 10:45. A member and her non-member friend, who were in the area for business and randomly decided to look for a church to go to. Her GPS brought them here. It was a powerful 15 minutes, in which we showed God's Plan for His Family and talked about eternal families and how the Gospel blesses families. **** was crying, and accepted a BOM and gave us her information to follow up. Then we all raced to church together (they decided to come to our ward with us), where we walked in 2 minutes late. We hadn't planned on any of our investigators coming (which is sad, I realize, but it's a holiday weekend--so there were a lot of valid excuses ), so we scanned the room for some open seats...and THEN...I SAW ***. With his gray ponytail and his super nice suit. My jaw dropped and we raced to take the spots next to him. And then I prayed so so so HARD that he would have a powerful experience. It was a GLORIOUS 3 HOURS, in which powerful testimony was shared. I literally have never been in a more inspired testimony meeting. EVERYTHING they talked about was exactly what *** and ***** needed to hear--several conversion stories, all centered in the Book of Mormon. A few Tithing testimonies--which is something a LA that was there was struggling with. ETC. You get the gist. Just so so inspired. We found out he bore his testimony in priesthood, and meaningfully participated in each of the other meetings.

...and the miracles continued.

It was the best day of my life. I wish you could see the smile on my face right now. THIS IS JOY.

Lessons learned: Heavenly Father LOVES us and gives us the miracles we faithfully expect and prepare for.

Fun fact: That very morning, before church, I was filling out his TR and I decided to write down "yes" in the "Attended Church?" column...just for fun. I wrote down "faith" next to it, thinking I could white it out if he didn't come. Even though he had told us he wouldn't be there. Oh, Heavenly Father...he's just so nice.

Thank you for ALL YOU DO AND HAVE DONE. This work is so real and so wonderful and SO Grace-filled.

Love,

Sister Wells
